I am slowly looking to transfer my urban trash of a lifestyle into one that incorporates nature actively into my day to day life so I can focus on my landscape photography, and other forms of creativity. amidst infrequent voyages out to the Blue Mountains (see the photos entitled ‘mounthay’ and ‘faulconbridge’) I have also been working on my poetry and painting technique, which I intent to slowly involve more and more into both my photography and this blog.

I feel like it is a good day to clarify what I want and aim to achieve out of my photos.

if it is not clear already, as you may have guessed I am a huge lover and believer of Australian bush and international wilderness. this extends beyond an aesthetic appreciation into passion for the conservation and rehabilitation of our somewhat damaged earth. many of my photos are taken in national parks, some of national or world heritage and all equally as breath taking, inspiring, unique and crucial to appreciating the breadth of Australian ecosystems. some of you may know about the recent infringements on our national parks beauty: not only have they allowed deforestation, hunting and cattle grazing to occur, but some states are even beginning to allow 99-year leases of the land for future development whatever that might involve. the speed of urbanisation, growth of our population and increasing mining demand means holding onto these spaces is becoming more of an issue as years pass - these parks are often already in critical states due to pollution, global warming, arson, mining and over development.

I want my photos to make you care, I want you to feel connected and involved with these eternally enchanting places. it takes generally less than an hour to lob down a tree; it takes hundreds of years for it to grow back. our continual destruction of this earth is something we can slow, hold back and eventually stop if we behave consciously and keep an open mind to new forms of energy, housing and so forth. even if you are not Australian, this message goes out to you:

we belong in nature, we come from nature, and we will return to nature. our enjoyable yet highly selfish and superficial existence in urban surroundings deserves to be questioned against the damage it is incurring in our forest, wetlands, mountains, deserts, rivers, waterfalls, and all the other beauty that has fostered us and every other living thing on this planet for millions of years.

I hope my photos convey that,
x from my daytrip this week to Faulconbridge in the Blue Mountains, so at last I have my mini-darkroom set up in Sydney. I am living on Parramatta Road, which if you don’t know is the largest artillery road (or maybe you’d call it a highway) and look forward to documenting all the bizarre people on this iconic route. I’m still gearing up for travelling around Australia - I’ve been working 40 hours a week to gather some funds for film, cameras, and road money. all things are going smoothly.

blue and yellow (sketch2)

blue and yellow (sketch2)

self portrait at Coogee (sketch1)

self portrait at Coogee (sketch1)

InBrief Mag Issue #4 Featured Artist Liam Dewey

InBrief Mag Issue #4 Featured Artist Liam Dewey:
I am totally humbled to be published as a photographer (for my first time) in the fourth issue of Melbourne magazine InBrief. I attended the launch last night and have nothing but respect for the content, editing and creative spirit of the magazine. It represents what is a blossoming art scene for the youth in Melbourne, which makes me beam with pride. Check it out as four of my photos from Beechworth are featured and I am too pleased.
